Considering Weight Loss Surgery? A New Tool Offers A Crystal Ball

Dr. Deepak Chopra discusses his weight-loss struggles with Dr. Oz

This procedure does not move the stomach or alter the way food enters or leaves it, and thus does not reduce the absorption of nutrients from food consumed. But it does refashion the stomach into a banana-shaped tube with about 20% of its former capacity. Devised by Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc., a surgical device giant that makes and sells supplies used in bariatric and other surgery, the comparison tool calculates a user’s BMI and asks about age, gender, race and ethnicity, and the presence of obesity-related diseases in order to provide data that fits the user’s profile. Before speaking with a physician, a patient can use it to learn the average weight loss that can be expected with each procedure at six months, 12 months, 18 months and, in some cases, 24 months after surgery. The tool also shows the average length of hospital stay following each procedure, and the probabilities of such risks as reoperation, hospital readmission, post-surgical illness and death. Because there’s still not much data on bariatric procedures’ long-term effects, weight-loss estimates past the two-year mark aren’t offered.

Chopra said mindful eating, stress control, and easy yoga workouts led to an effortless 20-pound weight loss . Deepak then shared with Dr. Oz some simple steps for regaining control of our diets and our lives, which he discussed in his new book, “What Are You Hungry For?” Among the tips Chopra shared include the following: Recognize when you’re feeling emotional (e.g., angry, sad, happy). Don’t eat when you feel negative emotions like guilt, shame or anger. Only eat when you’re physically hungry. Don’t multitask while eating.

5 Reasons Running May Not Help You Lose Weight

Within one week, their metabolism had adjusted and now didn’t need to work as hard to burn off the fat. One of the biggest problems with running at a steady, moderate-intensity pace, is that the calories you burn are limited to the time you spend sweating. So once your body adapts, the benefit is limited. That’s why weight training is oftentimes viewed as better than “just” running for fat loss. Lifting weights impacts your metabolism by causing mini-micro tears that need to be repaired.

In another, a health plan was upgraded to include more robust coverage. “This was an orchestrated effort by Anthem Blue Cross to get as many people off of these grandfathered plans as possible,” said William Shernoff, a Claremont, Calif., lawyer representing both plaintiffs. A WellPoint spokeswoman declined to comment, citing the pending litigation. Some consumers in California covered by insurers other than Blue Shield hope their carriers give them more time.

Hollywood targeted to give health care law a boost

Follow @ejamoore In the not-too-distant future, it is quite likely that most interactions between patients and the health care system will happen online , according to researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, who partnered with The Commonwealth Fund to review recent trends in digital health care as well as scientific literature. Thanks to consumer-directed health apps, electronic health records (EHRs), telemedicine, and the like, researchers say that patients are going to dramatically change the way they interact with their doctors. They report their findings in the November issue of the journal Health Affairs . The researchers estimate that when EHRs are in use in just 30 percent of community-based physicians’ offices, the increase in efficiency will: Enable doctors to meet the demands of between 4 and 9 percent more patients than they can today Help delegate care to physician assistants and nurse practitioners, resulting in 4 to 7 percent fewer visits with doctors Reduce the demand for specialists by another 2 to 5 percent since roughly that percentage can stick with generalists Deliver care to meet 12 percent more of current demand thanks to telemedicine and digital communication with doctors and nurses If doctors and patients adopt e-health tools more widely, the group says, these forecasts could be far higher.

Digital health tools likely to decrease visits to the doctor

The grant announcement comes after the stumbling launch of the federal website where Americans shop for the health insurance they are required to have next year. The White House also has been forced to backtrack on vows that no one would lose their existing coverage and that anyone happy with their current insurance and doctor could keep them. Arthur Caplan, head of the division of medical ethics at New York University’s Langone Medical Center, said to have credibility, Hollywood must present the health care plan warts and all. “If there are drawbacks and glitches and discontent, that should be part of the presentations,” said Caplan, who supports the law. “It should not be a place to propagandize; it should be a place to have honest open discussion, wrinkles and all, flaws and all, on health reform,” he said.
